Sadly, I don't have the luxury of a better drive. The DVD-ROM drive in my laptop is SLOOOOOW with EAC (ripping and encoding with -vbr-new is about 1.6x speed, which is an improvement from 1.3x when using -vbr-old). I just use the former out of paranoia, and a desire to never have to re-rip these again. Truth be told I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference between -V 0 and -V 2. I'm not sure that my current set of hardware would allow me to detect any differences between my LAME settings above and FLAC files of the same songs. I also don't know what to do with OGG, and there's a bitrate limit on AAC with Rockbox on the iriver H120, so that's out too. CBR is a waste, though, so I still use VBR. Yes, I know I could just use FLAC, but FLAC files are still a LOT larger than even CBR 320 MP3s. After some quality concerns raised by others, he decided to start from scratch based on the dist10 sources. Mike Cheng started it as a patch against the 8hz-MP3 encoder sources. Latest LAME release: v3.100 (October 2017) LAME development started around mid-1998. Maybe these were part of the original audio data, or maybe it was just psychological, but I just prefer to keep it closer to the original. LAME is a high quality MPEG Audio Layer III (MP3) encoder licensed under the LGPL. Also, while using -m s does increase the file size (full stereo, rather than the default joint-stereo), I'm just paranoid, and have come across moments in some previously-ripped files that sounded like brief soundstage compression or artifacting. q 0 supposedly doesn't do anything when coupled with -V 0, but I've noticed very slightly smaller files when using it. Now, I'm re-ripping everything to -vbr-new since it's faster, the files are smaller, and supposedly it sounds even better. Since getting laid-off, though, I haven't used my A2, since I haven't been taking the train into Manhattan. I used to use -vbr-old since my Cowon A2 doesn't play -vbr-new files correctly. The bold section is for the quality settings, the rest is for tagging (though I've noticed that these tag settings don't seem to play nicely with AudioScrobbler). That is, if the changes to the newer version focused on that area. Not sure if this will prove anything (probably not), but what is the difference in file size for the same song with a fixed (say, 192) bit rate? I would think the size would be very close to the same, but hopefully, the sound quality would be better. Is it a big difference, or rather small? I would think a small difference in size and a better output would result. Since you've done the tests, can you share your results with us? I'm interested in what you found. You are selecting VBR, so you can't expect exact file sizes from one version to another. I believe getting smaller file sizes for the same sound quality is one of the objectives for new versions. I am just wondering why I get different results in terms of average bitrate with 3.97 and 3.98 with this. Originally Posted by wolfB /img/forum/go_quote.gif

Hal, who maintains the ship, oversees the cryogenic hibernation and pretty much everything, has endless capabilities including lip-reading (which, by the way, we learn the hard way). Coming from a family of 9000 series which is, in Hal’s words “foolproof and incapable of error”, Hal is extremely proud and confident about what he does. The computer, commonly called as Hal, who sees everything through his camera eyes, speaks in a calm male voice. More importantly, there’s an artificially intelligent computer HAL 9000 on board that controls most of the functions of the ship. Floyd examines the monolith along with his team members. Once he reaches the base, it is revealed that he has come to examine a mysterious monolith found on the moon that was buried four million years ago. Floyd declines to answer while inquired about the purpose of his trip while they seem to believe in rumors of some sort of epidemic at the base. On his way to the base, he meets a few of his friends from the Soviet Union, while at Space Station V, a gorgeous twin-wheeled hub that serves as a transit point from Earth’s orbit to moon and other planets. Heywood Floyd, a scientific specialist for the US government who has been called up for a secret mission to Clavius base, an US research base on the moon. True pioneers! Then, in one of the most celebrated flash-forwards ever in the history of cinema, Kubrick takes us ahead millions of years by jumping from the shot of a bone triumphantly thrown up in the air to that of a satellite (That is not a spaceship although it is widely referred to as one) orbiting the earth in the 21st century. In no time, they even managed to perfect the art of killing one of their own, using their brand new invention. Plenty to eat! Meanwhile, the territorial fights continue to occur among the tribes and they start using bones to fight among themselves. This makes their lives a lot better and prosperous. After the appearance of the monolith, somehow they seem to have been inspired to use bones as tools/weapons. We see a beautiful shot of sunlight reflecting off of the monolith. They curiously and gingerly approach the monolith and examine it. One fine day, a mysterious black monolith appears at a watering hole, the habitat of one of the tribes. At times, they are being attacked by predators as well. The apes live in groups as several different tribes and often there are (nonviolent) conflicts among them over watering holes. They seem to be living off what the predators leave behind. But, they aren’t modern enough to hunt their preys. Apparently, apes are the most evolved species at the time. This visual poetry begins its journey from millions of years ago. So, here’s an attempt at explaining this gem of a film. But, it is not the brilliance of this legendary film but the themes and philosophical interpretations that’s been discussed the most over the years. It has been discussed in great deal for decades. Owing to the otherworldly quality in direction, nonverbal narrative style (minimal dialogues), stunning cinematography & visual effects and haunting music it is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. In terms of the content, making and technical brilliance, ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ is undoubtedly way ahead of its time or even our time. I have literally paused the movie several times and wondered things like “ Was this really made in 1968? I mean the moon landing was in 1969!” or “ Good lord! This makes ‘Interstellar’ look like ‘Doodlebug’!” But the grandeur and elegance of it shocks you. I knew I was going to watch a Stanley Kubrick epic. ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ was one hell of an exception. Usually when I watch an old classic film from my watchlist, I almost always feel “ Well, that was great, you know, just as expected” because I must have encountered the annoying reaction “OMG! You have never watched it? It’s brilliant!” from cinephiles a million times about that movie (Hypocrisy Alert). There has never been a film that made me feel so small. It stands tall in all its magnificence and it intimidates you. 2001: A Space Odyssey is the Everest among those Kubrickian mountains. You look up and wonder, how could anyone have climbed that high?” – Martin Scorsese. “Watching a Kubrick film is like gazing up at a mountaintop. As the rank of a Sudoku increases from n to n+1, the extra computational time needed to find a solution increases quite fast. Find two different solutions.įor 4×4 Sudoku, a case-by-case analysis utilizing the two essentially different grids proves that a well-formed puzzle must have a minimum of four distinct digits in the givens.įinally, it is intriguing to note that even though there are computer programs that can quickly and easily solve rank-3 Sudokus by employing a backtracking method, solving a Sudoku of arbitrary rank n is a much more difficult problem. The next exercise illustrates this with a specific example.Įxercise: The following rank-2 Sudoku has 2 2-1=3 distinct digits among the givens. Recall that the converse of a true statement is not necessarily true. It is important to note that this is not the same as stating that if a Sudoku of rank n has n 2-1 distinct digits in the givens, then it is well-formed. The fact discussed above can be restated as follows: If a Sudoku of rank n is well-formed, then it must have n 2-1 distinct digits among the givens. In particular, for the usual rank-3 Sudoku, at least 3 2-1=8 distinct digits must be used in the givens for the puzzle to be well-formed otherwise, the puzzle will have more than one solution. This is because if we had a rank-n puzzle where only n 2-2 symbols were used and we found a solution, then interchanging the places of the two symbols missing from the givens would result in another, different solution. However, the minimum number of givens for which a rank-3 Sudoku can be well-formed is not known.Įxercise: Can you come up with a Sudoku puzzle that is not well-formed?Īnother interesting question (that you may have considered when solving the above exercise) is how many distinct symbols need to be used among the givens for a puzzle to be well-formed? It turns out that for a Sudoku of rank n, at least n 2-1 distinct symbols must be used for the puzzle to have a unique solution. There are examples of rank-3 Sudoku puzzles with 17 givens that are well-formed. A Sudoku puzzle can have more than one solution, but in this case the kind of logical reasoning we described while discussing solving strategies may fall short. Which will be used to code up a grid generator. The Math Behind Sudoku Some More Interesting FactsĪ well-formed Sudoku puzzle is one that has a unique solution. I'm 100% confident that finding an grid generator algorithm is NP-hard because it requires solving the general Sudokus in order to gain the cyclic permutation pattern. How would I show that? What kind of proof should I use to prove that finding a Grid generator algorithm is just as hard as solving arbitrary Sudoku? I already proven (trivially proven) that code-Sudoku is NP-complete, but I'm not sure how to prove that creating valid Grid generators is NP-complete as well. It is referee’s responsibility to shout for a touching ball. No players are penalised when balls are disturbed by referee. The same rule doesn’t apply if the ball has moved due to defective table surface. If the ball balances on edge for a while and then falls off later, it is counted as pocketed and not replaced back on table.Ī ball moved by Striker’s partner or any other person at the table is repositioned to most probable place that referee thinks. In case, it happens to be a foul then also all balls are placed back and the turn moves to next player. In case, the ball is hit by another one and is pocketed while there is no faulty stroke then, all the balls are replaced and either same stroke is played or different stroke upon discretion of the player. If a ball is pocketed without being hit or doesn’t touch a ball in the process is put back on the table while the striker gets score for the stroke played. If the non-striker’s ball is off the table in his last stroke of a turn, it will be placed on spot of baulk-line or right corner of D. Similarly, player can also make request to know the count of continuous hazards. In case the referee misses to announce for last five hazards, the player will get additional five chances from the moment referee announces. The player and referee rule applies here also. Just like limitations to consecutive cannons, a player can make only 15 consecutive hazards. In case the referee misses to make note then, the last five cannons will be counted from the moment the referee announces.Īlternately, the player can also know the number of cannons upon request. The referee has to call out for last five after the player reaches count of 70. If a ball touches another ball on spot then, the ball is not considered to be on spot even though it hasn’t moved.Īn object ball not spotted correctly by the player cannot be raised as a fault by referee in any case.Ī maximum of 75 consecutive cannons are allowed for a striker. If the pyramid spot is also occupied then, it is placed in the centre spot.Ī ball is considered to be on spot if and only if it is placed by hand.Ī striker can check with referee for count of continuous pots of same ball. In case the spot is occupied, red ball is placed in pyramid spot. Starting with red ball, if it is pocketed then, it is placed back in its spot. Below are some those instances with next steps. If an object ball is in baulk, no part of its surface can be played on directly from in-hand.ĭuring the play, a player goes through certain instances that have been clearly marked by the WPBSA to handle them better. Before re-entering the baulk, the cue-ball must have contact with cushion or ball out of baulk. The cue-ball may be played against a cushion provided it touches a ball outside baulk. In case, it touches an object ball out of baulk, it is considered to have played out though it doesn’t cross the baulk line. When in-hand, the cue-ball must be placed out of baulk. The cue-ball is not considered to be in play by the referee if the tip of the cue is not touching the cue-ball provided attempt to play is not made. The referee has to check whether the cue-ball is placed correctly, if asked. The cue-ball must be struck from a position within “D” to play from in-hand The players take turns alternately unless one makes a score and continues the strike. It is the player’s responsibility to play with correct cue-ball even if the wrong ball is passed by the referee. The game is considered to have begun after the cue-ball is placed on the table and hit by tip of the cue. The winner has both options provided opposite player also mutually agrees. The choice of cue-ball and who to play first is decided by stringing. Stringing is the method of toss in Billiards. Most sports begin with a toss to decide who plays first. The winner of the match is decided on the highest average and total number of points. The winner of the game is declared based on player who scores maximum points or stipulated points of the game within the allotted time. Any means made to disturb the balls must be by an indirect stroke, a difficult one. One of the most popular tactics used to score more points is to leave the object balls in baulk area when the next player is in-hand. The points from a penalty made by a player are given to opponent player. Player or team scores when striker pots the ball in the pocket, for in-offs, cannon, and combination of both. Three balls are used a white, a yellow or spotted white (with more than two black dots for identification), and a red. Understanding the arrangement of balls on the board is important before how to play. English Billiards is played between two people or two sides. We always carried the San Moritz series because of its really comfortable, somewhat longer molded handle. I can tell you that their tools are a better quality than many produced by competing brands with fancy ergonomic handles and lousy blades. They have expanded the brand to include culinary tools, knife accessories, and a selection of Asian knives. It just feels and cuts better than anything else you’ve ever used.īuilt on the foundation established by Bernd and his brother Bruen, Messermeister is currently owned entirely by his widow and two daughters. Even the palm grip is more comfortable with his re-engineering of the handle. You’ll feel how much more comfortable the pinch grip is from Bernd’s sloping design in the bolster. Bernd lengthened the handle and designed a greater slant at the heel. He also reduced the cutting edge to 15 degrees instead of the 20+degree angle and this significantly improved slicing. In simple terms, his ideas reduced the awkwardness and made cutting more efficient. His invention was a semi-bolster and a camber on the edge, replacing a full vertical bolster with a flat camber. In technical terms, he created the bolsterless heel with an unusual camber and a more refined angle for the blade’s cutting edge. Some of Bernd’s innovations are now copied by many knife manufacturers. Through his in-depth conversations with professional chefs, Bernd engineered some major innovations in manufacturing culinary knives. Most manufacturers in Germany were wise enough to have dropped SCT in their knife production, but it is in wide use in China. We noticed a distressing difference when we sharpened these knives - foremost was the inability to hold an edge. The three pieces were then “frosted” with an alloy so that they looked like they are single-forged. Instead of utilizing the hot drop, hammer forged knives – which is expensive – the knives were being made in three pieces - much cheaper to produce. SCT was used by a few highly marketed German knife brands and was, to my mind, no more than a fancy way to market a cheaper knife at an astonishingly high price. The most sophisticated technology was sinter metal component technology (SCT). At this time, several techniques were in wide use in both Germany and France that faked the traditional drop forge production of chefs’ knives, thereby lowering the cost of said knife. He chose a three-generation-old knife-making family in Solingen and worked with them to produce a joint vision of hand-crafted and beautifully engineered knives. He worked with other knife companies until he had enough experience to forge (no pun intended) his own knife venture with his wife, Debbie, in 1981. Bernd Dressler emigrated from from Germany to Austrialia and then to the US. The story of Messermeister, which means Knife Master, starts with its founder with whom we conversed several times. Even the most highly marketed ones, sold in every type of store except 7-11 came up short against this one company: Messermeister Bernd Dressler: Listener & Innovator We checked consumer guides and magazines, talked to chefs and butchers, and came away with a few selections. These detectors are derived from likelihood reasoning, but it is their geometries and invariances that qualify them as coherence statistics. A chapter on classical hypothesis tests for covariance structure introduces the next three chapters on matched and adaptive subspace detectors. Then least squares theory and the theory of minimum mean-squared error estimation are developed, with special attention paid to statistics that may be interpreted as coherence statistics. The book begins with a review of classical results in the physical and engineering sciences where coherence plays a fundamental role. The appendices contain a comprehensive account of matrix theory, the SVD, the multivariate normal distribution, and many of the important distributions for coherence statistics. Stochastic representations are emphasized, as these are central to Monte Carlo simulations. Throughout, the transformation invariances of statistics are clarified, geometries are illuminated, and null distributions are given where tractable. The reader will find new results for model fitting for dimension reduction in models and ambient spaces for detection, estimation, and space-time series analysis for subspace averaging and for uncertainty quantification. General results are applied to problems in communications, cognitive radio, passive and active radar and sonar, multi-sensor array processing, spectrum analysis, hyperspectral imaging, subspace clustering, and related. The book contains a wealth of classical and modern methods of inference, some reported here for the first time. This book organizes principles and methods of signal processing and machine learning into the framework of coherence. NAPA Truck King Pins are built for strength and performance, and our range covers popular applications in vehicles weighing from 7.5 to 28 tons. It connects the trailer and fifth-wheel, and it’s a vital part of the truck’s operation. In general, more care must be taken when installing to prevent damage to the bushing. A king pin is an essential part of any semi-truck. However, only reamers can be used if required. They may or may not require fitting depending on the axle manufacturer’s design. The bushing is usually shorter than its bronze counterpart. However, the inside diameter features a low friction acetyl resin polymer surface which is dimpled and grease grooved for better grease distribution than the older nylon designs. These incorporate a steel backing as with the bronze bushings. They are more tolerant of contaminants than nylon and provide considerably longer milage in severe service applications such as refuse and dump vehicles, etc.Ĭomposite bushings are now being utilized in new axle production by most North American axle manufacturers. Very close bushing to pin clearance can be obtained either by honing or reaming. Steel backed bronze (bimetal) has traditionally been the bushing material of choice of many mechanics. Is there anything I should be thinking about other than looking for other worn parts as I take it apart I plan to remove the axle and bring it to a trusted shop for reaming. I did them over 15 years ago, but they are due again. They tend to wear out faster than bronze bushings in severe service applications. 1948 - 1956 F1, F100 & Larger F-Series Trucks - King Pins - My 56 is in need of king pins. They are generally only recommended for vehicles which spend most of their time on-highway. Nylon (Delrin) bushings provide reduced steering effort and are fast to install since they do not have to be fitted. A satin smooth micro-finish insures minimum steering effort yet retains the ability to hold grease for proper lubrication.īushing Types: Dayton Parts offers the installer three distinct types of bushing materials. All Dayton Parts pins utilize high quality steel and are heat treated for superior strength and long service life. It provides the means for the drag link, in connection with the steering arm, to change the lateral movement into turning motion.įeatures and Benefits: Since the king pin is the very heart of the axle assembly, it is mandatory for a replacement part of this nature to be of the highest quality. Now hobos are called trampsĪnyway I am a sucker for a bargain so I bought the king pin set & I THINK kit may have came with bushings but not sure Carpenters listings for king pins implies there are 2 different kinds of spindles for 1971 trucks ( according to serial numbers maybe ) ? I have asked here before but know answer !!! Do you know difference in spindles or any other info I will need ? I will try to see what came in my kit.The king pin serves as the pivot point which attaches the wheel spindle to the axle beam and is considered to be the most critical component of the axle assembly. The reamers were long so they would cut both the top and bottom bushings at the same time.ĭo you have the capability to do that ?Thank-you Hobohilton.I have hopped trains, & stayed some Hiltons. We turned the bushings out in the shop, pressed them in and then used reamers to true up the bore on the bushings. From memory the bushings in the axle wore faster than the king pins. Long ago as an apprentice in a machine shop we rebuilt front axles and steering axles on fork lifts. It’s also important to check each component regularly for signs of wear or damage, such as patching any holes or replacing filters or pumps. Maintenance needsĪll Intex above-ground pools require regular maintenance, such as skimming debris from the surface, adding proper chemicals to the water, and testing pH levels frequently. Personally, I lean toward the sand filter pump, but the cartridge filter also gets the job done too. Consider which type works best for your needs when making your decision. Intex offers two main filters - easy-set style models, which use a cartridge filter pump and rectangular-style filters, which use sand instead. Filtration systemĪn effective filtration system is essential for keeping your pool clean and healthy at all times. Warranties vary in length depending on the model, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the terms before making your purchase. Intex above-ground pools usually come with a manufacturer’s warranty that covers defects in workmanship or materials. PVC pools will be cheaper than those with pure steel frames. You can also select additional fortification components that provide extra strength and stability to the pool structure, such as a pool pad. Quality of materialsĪll Intex pools are made from durable materials designed to last for years with proper maintenance, such as heavy-duty PVC and robust steel frames. The quality, included systems, accessories, and more, will guide you to your ultimate perfect pool. Now that you’ve considered the physical limitations of your pool shopping, you can think about your personal preferences. Consider what pool you can afford to purchase at that moment and maintain over the long haul. As with all purchases, you should also factor in additional setup costs and maintenance expenses over time. Intex pools typically range in price from around $100 to $5,000, depending on the size and features desired (mid-level models usually sit at $1,000). If my pool were mainly or only for adults, a deeper pool would be fine. For instance, I know not to get a pool that is too deep for kids since they need to be safe in it. Think about the height and swimming abilities of those who will use your pool. Intex offers a range of depths with heights ranging from 23 inches up to 52 inches. When it comes to the depth of your pool, there are a variety of levels available. Therefore, I should be more inclined to focus more search on a rectangular pool. A rectangular pool will look and utilize that space better than a round pool. For example, I have a rectangular space for a pool in a corner of my yard. You want the shape of your pool to complement your yard. Rectangular pools are generally more spacious and better for swimming laps, while round and oval pools can fit into smaller spaces. Intex pools come in three general shapes: rectangular, round, and oval each shape has its advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to compare before making a purchase. Intex has several sizes available, ranging from 12-foot diameter pools to large 24-foot diameter pools. You should also consider the size of your family and what type of activities you plan to use the pool for. The size of your pool should be based on the amount of space you have available in your backyard. Let’s talk about the key ones below: Size Before you begin shopping for a pool, first consider the physical and logistical parameters you must deal with. Not every pool works with every house and budget you can’t fit a large round pool into a small rectangular space. Let’s dive into logistics in this first section. When it comes to backyard pools, there are many factors to take into account what size and shape of pool is best for your yard? What pool add-ons are essential to your needs? How much money do you have to spend on your pool? We think that all of these considerations can be separated into two categories: Logistical and Preferential.
